3 tips for sharing the road with larger vehicles

As a resident of Metairie, you are probably used to seeing large commercial trucks transporting heavy loads. In addition, you probably know how devastating a wreck with one of the large vehicles can be. A collision with a semi truck can be fatal, cause a catastrophic brain injury or cause any number of serious injuries. This is why it is vital to practice safe and defensive driving techniques when you are sharing the road with large vehicles.

Whether you are commuting for work, out for an afternoon drive or leaving town for a weekend road trip, the chances are high that you will find yourself in close proximity to a semitruck. Here are a few tips to help you stay safe in such a situation.

Keep your distance

Extra space is important when it comes to sharing the road with a semitruck or other large vehicle. In fact, you should always give semis much more space than you would to other passenger vehicles. Not only will this allow you room to maneuver in case something unexpected happens, it will also help you stay out of the trucks' blind spots. To ensure that you have put plenty of space between the truck and your vehicle, keep yourself in a position where you can see the driver's face in the truck's side mirrors. This usually means that the driver can see you.

Use proper passing techniques

Passing a semi, especially when the lanes are narrow, can be a bit terrifying. It is often just as nerve-racking for the truck driver. This is why it is important to use proper passing techniques. Use your signal, check your mirrors and don't move in front of the truck until you have checked that you are far enough ahead to safely return to the lane. Moreover, never pass on the right or cut anyone off. The truck driver might even flash their headlights to signal that it is safe for you to come back in the lane.

Take your time

In many cases, semitrucks are moving slower than other traffic because of the loads they are carrying in addition to the weight of the truck itself. This can cause drivers to become frustrated and do things that could potentially cause an accident. By taking your time and keeping plenty of distance between your vehicle and the truck, you might be able to avoid an accident caused by a reckless driver.

While the above tips can reduce your risk of an accident with a semitruck, sometimes it is impossible to avoid a collision. If you or a loved one has been the victim of a truck accident, you might be able to file claim for damages and fight for the compensation you deserve.
