Maritime work can easily lead to a head injury

Offshore work of all kinds usually presents workers with constant dangers, from risk of drowning to injuries common when working with heavy machinery. For many people who make a living on the water, these risks are simply part of the job, which is never completely safe. However, when an employee suffers an injury on the job, it is important for them to receive proper medical care as soon as possible to avoid unnecessary suffering and to ensure that a small injury does not become a serious threat.

This is particularly true when it comes to head injuries. Offshore workers can easily receive a head injury they may not recognize, especially when weather gets stormy. Any significant blow the head can cause a head injury, which may result in a mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) that the victim does not realize they have. Without proper care, a mild TBI can quickly ruin a victim's career and personal life.

Symptoms of a mild TBI

Mild TBIs are dangerous precisely because they are difficult to identify if the victim does not receive a full medical examination soon after the injury occurs. These injuries often do not cause any pain or other symptoms for days or even weeks, and by the time symptoms do arise, a victim may not recall the injury at all.

Physical symptoms may include:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Blurring vision
  • Prolonged headaches
  • Foggy feeling in the victim's brain

Mild TBIs may also impact a victim's personality, causing them to erupt erratically when they grow frustrated. A mild TBI may also make it difficult or impossible for a victim to perform a task they have done many times before, or may cause the victim to constantly misunderstand what they read or hear in conversation. For workers in high-intensity work environments like those typically found offshore, this can destroy a victim's relationship with their employer and coworkers.

Get the diagnosis and help you need

If you believe that you suffered a mild TBI while working offshore, be sure to seek out proper medical treatment as soon as possible. Leaving a TBI untreated is dangerous, and the consequences can be devastating. A strong legal strategy can help you understand and protect your rights and fight for fair compensation from the responsible party, while helping you focus on your recovery.
